A recent study has determined that “exposure to an imagery-evoking ad can result in an erroneous belief that an individual has experienced the advertised brand.”  To demonstrate the “false experience effect” theory, students in the study were introduced to the fictional Orville Redenbacher’s Gourmet Fresh Microwave Popcorn product. Some students watched low-imagery ads while others watched ads of people eating greasy, delicious popcorn.  Those students exposed to the more vivid ads, reported having tried the (fictional) popcorn.

As you can imagine, this topic is right up Product Displacement’s ally as one of the main goals of this blog is to demonstrate how looks at the visual cues of a fictionalized brand and identify it by its real world inspiration.
